Meriam Park
Chico
Meriam Park is southeast Chico's master-planned new urbanist community, taking shape on a site of roughly 270 acres between East 20th Street and Humboldt Road, west of Bruce Road. Little Chico Creek crosses the middle of the neighborhood, and the plan — drafted by New Urban Builders with a design team led by architect Leon Krier and adopted by the City in 2007 — is built around a simple idea: homes, shops, offices, parks and civic buildings mixed together along interconnected streets, so daily life happens within a short walk.
Development is organized into three districts. The Tank District is the social core, home to Farmers Brewing Co.'s restaurant and taproom, The Barn — a relocated 110-year-old barn that hosts events and a certified farmers' market — plus coffee shops, eateries and a climbing and fitness gym. The Thrive District gathers professional and medical offices, and the North Butte County Courthouse stands on Concord Avenue. The Dwell District holds the housing: contemporary single-family homes, flats and townhomes fronting courtyards and streets, and the Bungalow Commons, where for-sale homes share community gardens.
Parks are threaded throughout. Indigo Park, at Springfield Drive and Concord Avenue, has walking trails, a climbing structure, pickleball courts and a dog park; Emerson Park, behind Little Chico Creek Elementary at the neighborhood's western edge, adds picnic tables with built-in chessboards and a play area. The State honored the plan in 2010 as a Catalyst Project for Sustainable Strategies. Highway 99 is reached via East 20th Street, Highway 32 runs along the north, and the city center is about two and a half miles away.
